A Visit to the Permanent Way Institute in the United Kingdom
During our recent visit to the United Kingdom, members of the China Hong Kong Railway Institution (CHKRI), including our chairman and secretary, had the opportunity to engage with colleagues from the Permanent Way Institute (PWI). Founded in 1884, the PWI has been a cornerstone of knowledge leadership in rail infrastructure engineering for over a century. It works closely with leading organizations and government bodies to influence and directly impact industry training, management, and competency standards. Throughout its history, PWI has stood at the forefront of industry research, science, and innovation, fostering a solid, global community of experts and enthusiasts.
This visit, which took place in October, was part of our ongoing efforts to strengthen ties with PWI. Hosted by Dr. Sin Sin Hui from Network Rail, we explored key topics such as Mobile Maintenance Trains for rail replacement, Plain Line Pattern Recognition, and the management of Rolling Contact Fatigue. The visit included insightful site tours in Leeds and Darlington, as well as a ride on the test train from Stratford, allowing us to observe innovative practices in action. This collaboration underscores our commitment to education and knowledge-sharing within the railway industry. We look forward to continuing our collaboration with other institutions, especially PWI, as we work together to advance the industry.
