Technical Seminar – Decarbonisation and ESG Perspective in Railway Infrastructure
The technical seminar held on 17 October 2024 focused on the integration of decarbonisation and ESG principles in railway infrastructure. Ir Tim Wong, an expert in rail projects and carbon management advisory, shared insights on the critical role of professionals in achieving net-zero emissions.
The seminar highlighted the importance of Whole Life Carbon Assessment (WLCA) in evaluating embodied and operational carbon across the lifecycle of railway projects. It was noted that embodied carbon could account for up to 70% of total emissions in infrastructure projects. Tim discussed the use of a digital platform to identify WLCA hotspots, establish carbon footprint baselines, and meet ESG reporting requirements.
Drawing from his experience with the MTR Kwun Tong Line extension—Hong Kong’s first Green Bond infrastructure project—Tim emphasized the significance of green transit systems in decarbonisation and improving connectivity. He also addressed the need for embedding ESG principles into sustainability strategies, given that the built environment contributes nearly 40% of global carbon emissions.
The seminar provided attendees with valuable insights into sustainable railway infrastructure development, ESG compliance, and innovative strategies for carbon reduction in the rail industry.
