Introduction

In core urban area, the open-cut excavation of underground station including the main body, crossovers, and turnback/storage lines, often presents challenges such as impossibility to dismantle, accommodate, or touch, making non-excavation construction technology the only solution. The trenchless construction technology system in rail transit of Shanghai Tunnel Engineer Co., Ltd. includes Pipe-jacking/TBM, Pipe roof and brand-new Underground Bundle Integrated Tunnel, etc.

The super-large section rectangular pipe-jacking method is suitable for trenchless construction of underground stations with medium passenger flow and long distances. The Integral Tunnelling Technology of Pipe-jacking/TBM for Quasi-rectangular Tunnels (0-θ System) considers the efficient use of underground space and strict environmental protection requirements. It enables integrated non-excavation construction of turnback/crossover lines in rail transit, while maintaining the potential for future line extensions and turnback functionality, thereby reducing costs. The pipe roof method, as a trenchless construction method with a “free cross-section,” allows lateral advancement, avoiding road occupancy during construction. It is a technique that has no impact on traffic or the existing station’s functionality. The Underground Bundle Integrated Tunnel method enables the integrated construction of platform and station hall space, making it suitable for non-excavation construction in stations with high passenger flow.

Speaker

Dr. Xiao Xiaochun obtained his Ph.D. degree from Dalian University of Technology, China, and joined Shanghai Tunnel Engineering Co., Ltd. (STEC) in 2003. He is currently the Director of the STEC R&D center. With over 20 years of experience in tunneling and project management, he has worked with Tunnel Boring Machines ranging from Φ6.60m to Φ15.56m. Dr. Xiao has been deeply involved in significant projects, including the reinstatement of Shanghai Metro Line 4 after a major collapse, the Singapore MRT Circle Line C855, Marina Bay Sands IR P8402, and the Shanghai Beiheng Underground Expressway (Φ15.56m shield tunnel project). His expertise and contributions to the tunneling industry have been recognized and honored by the People’s Republic of China as a professional engineer.
