Introduction

This seminar, jointly organized by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) and the China Hong Kong Railway Institution (CHKRI), aims to share innovative maintenance strategies for the Track and Civil Infrastructure, enhancing the safety and efficiency of the rail network.

Track and Civil Infrastructure are two critical systems of the rail network. The track comprises rails, trackforms, and fastenings that form the track structure directly supporting the trains. Civil Infrastructure includes tunnels, viaducts, and stations, which support the tracks and distribute loads. These systems are crucial in safeguarding passenger journeys across the 271-kilometer network.

Despite the extensive length of these systems, most maintenance can only be performed during the “Golden 2-hour Window” in non-traffic hours, posing significant time constraints for the upkeep of both the Track and Civil Infrastructure. To address this challenge, various new initiatives have been developed, enabling maintenance to be conducted more efficiently.
