Introduction

On 22 April 2025, the China Hong Kong Railway Institution (CHKRI) successfully organized a joint seminar titled “Wheel Rail Interface History And Challenges”. The wheel-rail interface is a critical component of railway systems. Effective wheel rail interface management is essential for ensuring safety, efficiency, and reliability in railway operations. It impacts the durability of wheels and rails, passenger comfort, noise levels, and overall system performance. Proper management reduces maintenance costs by mitigating wear and enhances operational safety by preventing accidents related to interface issues. It also improves passenger experience by minimizing noise and optimizing ride quality.The seminar attracted industry professionals and experts.

We are honored to have Mr. Brian Counter, Technical Director of the Permanent Way Institution, as our speaker. Mr. Counter introduced the wheel-rail interface management in UK, focusing on sharing of related derailment case and management of the wheel-rail interface strategies to enhance operational safety and improve passenger comfort.
